Can You Fly a Drone at Night?

Many people still wonder if drones should be flown at night. First of all, there is no license to be acquired to allow you to fly drones at night. You should only be concerned about the safety rules issued by the Federal Aviation Administration. If you follow all the rules and guidelines given by FAA, you will never get in trouble with the law, and your drone will not be crashing now and then.

If you have ever use a drone at night, you will agree with me that flying a drone at night is difficult than during the day. It will be difficult to see obstacles at night hence the chances of crashing your drone are high. Below are guidelines on how you can you fly a drone at night.

The first safety guideline to flying drones at night is knowing the area. If you are new in the place, you can familiarize yourself with the area you intend to use at night during the day. You can fly the drone in the field or pass by regularly. Knowing the area helps you mark the areas with trees, walls and any other obstacle that could crash your drone.

Mind Your Surroundings

It is always important to mind your surroundings in whatever you do. As a kid, your parents must have used the phrase mind the many surrounding many times, and using a drone at night needs requires you to mind your surroundings. Be watchful that you do not hit people passing by or your neighbor’s windows. At times, all your concentration might be on the drones for instance when taking aerial views such that you forget about your surroundings. It is advisable to have someone watch your drone at such intense moments.

Remove the Nd Filter

The ND filter is a setting used to give bright and saturated images during day shoots. You do not need it at night. Using the ND filter at night cause dark shorts and accidents so make sure that you have it removed before using your drone in the dark.

Turn on the Led Lights

As already said, it is challenging to monitor your drone in the dark. Turning on the LED lights of the drone helps you to see where it is going. However, the LED lights are not suitable for shots hence make sure to turn them off any time you are taking a shot. You do not want the red or blue glow from LED lights on the images.
